Wheelchair Rugby Australia and Disability Sport and Recreation Victoria Finalise New Partnership

Wheelchair Rugby Australia (WRA) and Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR) have today entered into an exciting new agreement, aimed at supercharging Victoria’s wheelchair rugby program from 2025. The new agreement will see an increase in resourcing at the community level, designed to make wheelchair rugby more accessible for the Victorian community and increase participation across the state.

As part of the agreement, the Victorian program will be staffed with a coach, a program manager and a participation lead, all of which will support a more regular training and local competition model to ensure a more robust participation and grassroots base for the sport.

Disability Sport & Recreation will work with WRA to continue the high-level delivery of the Melbourne Invitational, and the support of the Victorian teams competing in sanctioned interstate events in 2025, namely the Wheelchair Rugby National League and Wheelchair Rugby National Championship.

Referring to the partnership Disability Sport and Recreation’s CEO Liz Tesone said, “DSR is excited to collaborate with Wheelchair Rugby Australia to elevate the sport in Victoria. Together, we are committed to creating more opportunities for athletes to thrive and inspiring the next generation of players across the state”.

Chris Nay, CEO of Wheelchair Rugby Australia, added “Victorian wheelchair rugby has a strong history in our sport dating back many years. We are excited to partner with DSR in 2025 to supercharge the program and ensure that we can provide an environment that the people of Victoria can be proud of now and into the future.”

Further announcements will be made in the coming days relating to local staff appointments and official program commencement dates.
