Major Events Gold Coast Partner With Wheelchair Rugby National Championship
Wheelchair Rugby Australia (WRA) is pleased to announce a newly formed partnership with Major Events Gold Coast for the 2021 GIO Wheelchair Rugby National Championship this April.
The announcement coincides with the decision to award the Gold Coast with the event for 2021 for the first time and reflects the Gold Coast’s unwavering commitment to bringing high-level sporting events to their community.
Commenting on the event, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said “I’m thrilled to see our city’s sporting venues being utilised to support signature events like this. I played rugby in its traditional form throughout my early years and I still recall how tough that was.”
“That said, watching the intensity of the world’s-best wheelchair competitors, with their blocking tactics and heavy hits, makes me feel a bit soft. “I encourage all Gold Coasters to get down and support these amazing athletes.” Mr Tate continued.
Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick said “I'm thrilled to have secured the 2021 Wheelchair Rugby Australia National Championship for our city. Set to be held at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre, it's wonderful to see our City Venues host such fantastic events.”
The event will be broadcast online with commentary and will showcase the best wheelchair rugby athletes across Australia as they represent their respective state teams in what will be their final sanctioned competition hit-out ahead of the Tokyo games.
