Venues and dates confirmed as Wheelchair Rugby Australia announces ‘New Look’ Competition Structure for 2020
Wheelchair Rugby Australia (WRA) has today announced a host of exciting changes to Australia’s premier domestic wheelchair rugby competition, designed to reinvigorate the sport.
The Wheelchair Rugby National League will commence in Brisbane in April 2020, before heading to Sydney and then Melbourne for the final and decisive round.
The new format of the competition will see an accumulative leader board across all three rounds of competition, along with the creation of a national development series to sit beneath the league, designed to provide a structured means of participation for travelling, new and developing athletes in the sport at each event.
Wheelchair Rugby Australia’s general manager, Chris Nay said, “It is really pleasing to be able to announce the changes to the national league competition for next season. What is most satisfying is that this was a collective effort, with all of the state programs offering advice and input in the best interests of the sport, and most importantly the athletes.”
“The new competition format has been designed to provide a concentrated period of rugby for our athletes and programs. With the league concluding 3 weeks prior to the 2020 National Championship, athletes will be able to put themselves forward for selection into their respective state teams with strong performances in the national league”, Nay continued.
The 2019 GIO Wheelchair Rugby National Championship was the strongest competition in recent memory, and now the inclusion of the Wheelchair Rugby National League is another positive step forward for the domestic state of play for wheelchair rugby in Australia.
